Skill progress is useful only when you understand what is being trained and what completes the level. Choose a skill in your gladiator's Skills tab, let Ludus time advance, and return to the fighter when training finishes. Arena fights can now add progress to that selected skill, but they cannot complete the level for you.
Select a Skill and Track Its Progress
The collected demo player experience shows the basic sequence: select a gladiator, open Skills, choose an available training option, and resume time with the sun control or Space.
Inspect the skill's effect, current rank, and training time. Do not assume that a later rank takes the same time as the first or that two different skills fit the same preparation window.
When training completes, the game pauses automatically under the August 30 update. That pause is a chance to choose another skill, change the fighter's activity, or schedule recovery.
If the bar is not moving, first check that time is running and the fighter is still assigned to training. A resting gladiator or someone doing another activity is not following the same schedule as an active trainee.
Check Class Access and Read the Current Effect
Available skills and maximum ranks are not identical for every class. The August 30 developer notes make Dodge Roll available to every class but specify different maximum levels by class. They also make Deadly Strike trainable by every class and increase the maximum number of skills a gladiator can train.
That does not establish one universal number of ranks or skills for every fighter. Use the choices displayed on the actual class you selected.
Read the latest effect description before investing. The official Dominus Gladiatus updates include important changes:
- Defense was reworked in October to increase Armor supplied by each equipped armor piece.
- Deadly Strike was changed in November to add damage against enemies below 30% Health instead of relying on its older random trigger.
- Last Stand replaces Armor Mastery and lets a gladiator survive one killing blow per fight with 1 Health, followed by temporary invulnerability.
An old video can show where training is selected without providing the current definition of the skill being selected.
Choose Training Time You Can Actually Use
Match the skill to both the fighter's role and the next arena date. A control effect, improved survivability, or damage option can be useful for different reasons; there is no need to choose the longest available task simply because it looks powerful.
Player experience repeatedly shows this timing decision near the end of a demo run. When no suitable level can finish before the final, the player stops training and rests instead of accumulating more Fatigue for an unavailable upgrade.
Training support can improve the window:
| Support | Demonstrated role |
|---|---|
| Palus | A training post with a 20% speed benefit in collected demo tooltips |
| Doctore | A staff training boost with a cooldown |
The October 16 update removes the Doctore boost's extra Fatigue penalty. That correction matters when comparing it with older footage, though ordinary training and fighting still require Fatigue management.
Do not assume an acceleration makes every rank finish before a fixed deadline. Check the remaining time and progress in your own game.
Finish What Arena Combat Helps You Start
The November 2 update adds progress from fighting toward the currently trained skill:
- A victory can grant up to 10% training progress.
- A defeat can grant up to 15% training progress.
- Arena progress cannot completely finish a skill level.
The last point is easy to miss. Return the gladiator to training to finish the level rather than expecting another arena result to complete it automatically.
The percentages are maximums described by the update, not guaranteed payouts from every fight. Nor does a larger possible progress reward make defeat desirable: the fighter may suffer other consequences, and Ruthless defeats provide no coins.
Choose the current skill deliberately, then treat the arena contribution as part of its progress rather than a replacement for your Ludus training plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start skill training?
Select the gladiator, open Skills, choose an available skill, and resume Ludus time. Inspect the training state if progress does not begin.
Why did the game pause after a level finished?
Automatic pausing on completed skill training was added in the August 30 update. It gives you a point to assign the next activity.
Can every class learn Dodge Roll?
The official update makes it available to every class, but maximum levels differ by class. Check the selected fighter's actual options.
Why has arena progress not completed my level?
The November 2 rules deliberately prevent arena progress from finishing a skill level. The gladiator must return to regular training to complete it.
