A better weapon is useful only if it suits the fighter carrying it, and expensive armor is not a substitute for a complete build. Dominus Gladiatus asks you to equip gladiators for their roles before automatic arena battles. Start with the weapon-and-skill combination, then compare protection and the money left for the rest of the school.

Choose equipment for the fighter's role

Open the gladiator's equipment options and inspect the items available to him. Recorded demo player experience shows sword-and-shield fighters and net-and-trident fighters using different tools, alongside protective items such as helmets, armbands, and leg equipment.

For a shield-focused fighter, check the weapon, shield, and blocking skills together. For a net user, inspect both the trident and net rather than assuming one upgrade improves every part of the combination.

The official Dominus Gladiatus Steam page explicitly ties weapons and armor to arena roles. This is a better starting principle than buying the most expensive available item regardless of who needs it.

Compare weapon damage and range using the current build

The November 2 pre-launch update changed weapons from variable damage ranges to fixed damage. Earlier demo recordings frequently compare low and high damage rolls; those are historical examples, not the current damage model described by that update.

Weapon range also matters. The September 6 notes gave spears and tridents a minimum attack range, and October added range information to equipment tooltips. Read both Damage and Range before deciding that two weapons with different behavior can be compared by damage alone.

Weapon Skill provides a flat damage bonus under the August 23 change, with further balancing in November. Keep the equipment's displayed effect separate from the contribution of trained skills; do not invent a combined damage formula from numbers shown in an older video.

Understand how armor and defensive skills interact

Part of the buildWhat to evaluate
Armor piecesThe protection supplied by the items actually equipped.
Defense skillThe October rework improves the Armor provided by equipped pieces.
Shield and blocking skillsWhether the fighter has the equipment and training to use the blocking role effectively.
Helmet and other item effectsTheir current tooltip, rather than an effect copied from an old recording.

Player experience gives a useful warning about shields: purchasing a better one does not remove the need for Shield Guard training. Conversely, completing a defensive skill does not make an avoidably weak loadout irrelevant.

Version details can change the comparison. October 16 introduced helmet-block pushback, but November 2 removed it. Do not price an upgrade around a pushback benefit that no longer belongs to the updated combat rules.

Upgrade the lineup and recover unused equipment

Inspect the next opponent and the whole lineup before spending. If the next match needs two fighters, improving only your champion can leave the teammate using a practice weapon. Recorded demo player experience repeatedly shows that second fighter becoming an urgent equipment purchase.

Check whether you already own a useful item before buying another. The August 30 update allowed equipment to be removed directly from a gladiator's equipment screen and added an Armory Sell tab. Earlier developer notes also confirm that equipped items return to the Armory when a gladiator is sold.

Use the current purchase and sale values. Weapon, shield, and equipment prices have been rebalanced, so a video's old shopping list is not a dependable current budget. Preserve enough money for upkeep and necessary recovery rather than treating every remaining coin as equipment money.

FAQ

Do weapons still roll damage within a range?

The November 2 update changed weapons to fixed damage. Old videos showing damage ranges describe earlier demo behavior.

Does Defense replace armor?

No. Its October rework improves the Armor supplied by equipped pieces. Evaluate the skill and the armor together.

Can I remove equipment and sell unused items?

The August 30 update added direct unequipping from the gladiator equipment screen and a Sell tab in the Armory. Check the current sale value before deciding what to keep for a reserve.
